संजय उवाच
तस्मिन् सुतुमुले युद्धे वर्तमाने भयावहे ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नो महाराज द्रोणम् एवाभ्यवर्तत ॥
संमृजानो धनुः श्रेष्ठं ज्यां विकर्षन् पुनः पुनः ॥
अभ्यवर्तत द्रोणस्य रथं रुक्मविभूषितम् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नं तदायान्तं द्रोणस्यान्तचिकीर्षया ॥
परिवव्रुर् महाराज पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ॥
तथा परिवृतं दृष्ट्वा द्रोणम् आचार्यसत्तमम् ॥
पुत्रास् ते सर्वतो यत्ता ररक्षुर् द्रोणम् आहवे ॥

tasmin sutumule yuddhe vartamāne bhayāvahe ||
dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārāja droṇam evābhyavartata ||
saṃmṛjāno dhanuḥ śreṣṭhaṃ jyāṃ vikarṣan punaḥ punaḥ ||
abhyavartata droṇasya rathaṃ rukmavibhūṣitam ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ tadāyāntaṃ droṇasyāntacikīrṣayā ||
parivavrur mahārāja pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
tathā parivṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā droṇam ācāryasattamam ||
putrās te sarvato yattā rarakṣur droṇam āhave ||
In that most tumultuous battle, terrible and unceasing, Dhrishtadyumna, O great king, rushed against Drona himself. Stroking his excellent bow, drawing the bowstring again and again, he rushed toward Drona's gold-adorned chariot. Then, as Dhrishtadyumna advanced, eager to finish Drona, the Panchalas together with the Pandavas surrounded him, O great king. Seeing Drona, the best of teachers, thus surrounded, your sons, ready on every side, protected Drona in the battle.

Dhrishtadyumna, born from the sacrificial fire for Drona's destruction, rushes toward the goal appointed to him — and at once a wall of defenders closes around him. It is telling that both sides know the decree: one is drawn toward it, the other strains to turn it aside. The verse teaches that what is foreordained both draws and terrifies: one born for a task cannot but go toward it, and those who resist cannot but resist; and yet above the efforts of both stands an outcome already written from on high.
