विजित्य समरे योधांस् तावकान् भरतर्षभ ॥
दध्मतुर् मुदितौ शङ्खौ वासुदेवधनंजयौ ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नो महाराज द्रोणं विद्ध्वा त्रिभिः शरैः ॥
चिच्छेद धनुषस् तूर्णं ज्यां शरेण शितेन ह ॥
तन् निधाय धनुर् नीडे द्रोणः क्षत्रियमर्दनः ॥
आददे ऽन्यद् धनुः शूरो वेगवत् सारवत्तरम् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नं ततो द्रोणो विद्ध्वा सप्तभिर् आशुगैः ॥
सारथिं पञ्चभिर् बाणै राजन् विव्याध संयुगे ॥
vijitya samare yodhāṃs tāvakān bharatarṣabha ||
dadhmatur muditau śaṅkhau vāsudevadhanaṃjayau ||
dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārāja droṇaṃ viddhvā tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
ciccheda dhanuṣas tūrṇaṃ jyāṃ śareṇa śitena ha ||
tan nidhāya dhanur nīḍe droṇaḥ kṣatriyamardanaḥ ||
ādade 'nyad dhanuḥ śūro vegavat sāravattaram ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ tato droṇo viddhvā saptabhir āśugaiḥ ||
sārathiṃ pañcabhir bāṇai rājan vivyādha saṃyuge ||
Having abandoned their horses in battle, while others urged [them] on, in confusion they rushed about in that terrible darkness. Having overcome your own warriors in battle, O bull among the Bharatas, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya joyfully blew their two conches. Dhrishtadyumna, O great king, having pierced Drona with three arrows, swiftly severed the bowstring on the bow with a sharp arrow. Having set that bow down into its rest, Drona, crusher of kshatriyas, the hero, took up another bow, swift, more sturdy.

Drona, whose bowstring has been cut, does not lose his composure: he calmly sets the bow down 'into its rest' and takes up another, 'sturdier' one. This coolness of the master even under a blow is significant. The verse teaches that a master is not troubled by a single setback: deprived of one instrument, he takes up another, better one without haste; and in this unshaken readiness to go on -- not in flawlessness -- true mastery of one's craft reveals itself.
