तं निवार्य शरैस् तूर्णं धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः ॥

प्रावर्तत नदी घोरा शोणितौघतरङ्गिणी ॥
उभयोः सेनयोर् मध्ये नराश्वद्विपवाहिनी ॥
यथा वैतरणी राजन् यमराष्ट्रपुरं प्रति ॥
द्रावयित्वा तु तत् सैन्यं धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् ॥

vyadhamat kauravīṃ senāṃ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
vadhyamāne bale tasmiṃs tava putrasya māriṣa ||
prāvartata nadī ghorā śoṇitaughataraṅgiṇī ||
ubhayoḥ senayor madhye narāśvadvipavāhinī ||
yathā vaitaraṇī rājan yamarāṣṭrapuraṃ prati ||
drāvayitvā tu tat sainyaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān ||
atyarājata tejasvī śakro devagaṇeṣv iva ||
Then Drona pierced Dhrishtadyumna with seven swift arrows, and his charioteer with five, O king, in that clash. Quickly repelling him with arrows, Dhrishtadyumna, the great warrior, scattered the Kaurava host by hundreds and thousands. As your son's army was being slaughtered, O honored one, a terrible river flowed between the two hosts, surging with waves of blood and bearing men, horses, and elephants, like the Vaitarani, O king, toward the city of Yama's realm.

The blood of the slain flows as a river, "like the Vaitarani" — the infernal river separating the world of the living from the realm of Yama. It is telling that the battlefield itself gives birth to this river of the underworld, carrying bodies toward the city of death. The verse teaches that war creates hell on earth with its own hands: not somewhere beyond, but here, between two armies, a Vaitarani of blood flows; and everyone who swells the slaughter digs the channel of this river that draws the living into the abode of death.
