यथा यथा ह्य् अयुध्यन्त पाण्डवानां महारथाः ॥
तथा तथा तद् अस्त्रं वै व्यवर्धत जनाधिप ॥
वध्यमानास् तथास्त्रेण तेन नारायणेन वै ॥
दह्यमानानलेनेव सर्वतो ऽभ्यर्दिता रणे ॥
यथा हि शिशिरापाये दहेत् कक्षं हुताशनः ॥
तथा तद् अस्त्रं पाण्डूनां ददाह ध्वजिनीं प्रभो ॥

tathā tathā tad astraṃ vai vyavardhata janādhipa ||
vadhyamānās tathāstreṇa tena nārāyaṇena vai ||

yathā hi śiśirāpāye dahet kakṣaṃ hutāśanaḥ ||
tathā tad astraṃ pāṇḍūnāṃ dadāha dhvajinīṃ prabho ||

शब्दशः अर्थ

पाण्डवानाम् महारथाःpāṇḍavānām mahārathāḥthe great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas; the great warriors of the Pandavas

व्यवर्धत जनाधिपvyavardhata janādhipagrew, O lord of peoples; increased, O lord of peoples

अनुवाद

The more the great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas fought, the more that weapon grew, O lord of peoples. Struck down thus by that weapon, the Narayana, as though burned by fire, they were pressed on every side in battle. As at winter's end fire would burn dry grass, so that weapon burned the army of the Pandus, O lord.

भाष्य

The monstrous property of the astra: the fiercer the resistance, the harder it strikes — its power feeds on the very struggle against it. It is telling that the warrior's ordinary weapon, persistence, here becomes his ruin. The verse teaches that there are troubles which stubborn resistance only strengthens; and wisdom sometimes lies not in fighting but in yielding — for a power that grows from resistance is overcome only by giving it up.
