Śṛṅgī said: 'Whether this was rashness, father, or an evil deed done [by me], whether it is pleasing to you or displeasing — my word was not spoken in vain. It will not be otherwise, father, I tell you: I do not speak falsehood even in jest — how then [could there be falsehood] when I curse?' Śamīka said: 'I know you, my son, as one of fierce power and truthful in speech; never before have you spoken falsely — this too will not prove false. [But] a son, even when grown, must always be instructed by his father — so that he may become endowed with virtues and attain great glory; all the more you, still a child, [though] matured by austerity, O lord. And anger grows excessively in the powerful, in the great of soul. Seeing in you sonship, childishness, and [this] rashness, I find it fitting to instruct you, O best of the keepers of dharma. Be at peace, then, living on forest food, abandoning this anger — [otherwise] you will ruin your dharma. For anger robs ascetics of the dharma accumulated with difficulty; and for those bereft of dharma there is no desired path. Peace (śama) brings perfection to ascetics who are patient; to the patient belong both this world and the next. Therefore live always in patience, with senses conquered; through patience (kṣamā) you will attain the worlds next after [the world of] Brahmā. As for me, having settled into peace, I will do now what can be done: I will send word to the king, [informing him]: "You are cursed by my foolish child-son, O king, who, seeing the insult done to me by you, cursed you in anger."'
