तथैव वनदुर्गेषु पुष्पितद्रुमसानुषु ॥
सरःसु रमणीयेषु पद्मोत्पलयुतेषु च ॥
नदीद्वीपप्रदेशेषु वैडूर्यसिकतासु च ॥
सुतीर्थवनतोयासु तथा गिरिनदीषु च ॥
सगरस्य प्रदेशेषु मणिहेमचितेषु च ॥
पत्तनेषु च रम्येषु महाशालवनेषु च ॥
देवारण्येषु पुण्येषु तथा पर्वतसानुषु ॥
गुह्यकानां निवासेषु तापसायतनेषु च ॥
सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पेषु मानसेषु सरःसु च ॥
बिभ्रती परमं रूपं रमयाम् आस पाण्डवम् ॥

devāraṇyeṣu puṇyeṣu tathā parvatasānuṣu ||
guhyakānāṃ nivāseṣu tāpasāyataneṣu ca ||
sarvartuphalapuṣpeṣu mānaseṣu saraḥsu ca ||
bibhratī paramaṃ rūpaṃ ramayām āsa pāṇḍavam ||
"So too in forest strongholds, on slopes with flowering trees, by delightful lakes filled with lotuses and water lilies; in the regions of river islands and on sands the color of beryl, by forest waters with fine fords and by mountain rivers; in regions of the ocean strewn with jewels and gold, in delightful cities and in great sala groves; in holy divine forests and on mountain slopes, in the dwellings of the guhyakas and in the abodes of ascetics; by waters with fruits and flowers of every season and by the Manasa lakes -- bearing a supreme form, she delighted the Pandava."

Here the scripture unfurls the splendor of the earth through a long procession of beautiful places. Telling is the abundance of holy sites in this catalogue -- divine forests, ascetics' abodes, the Manasa lakes: Bhima's joy flows not amid impurity but among places pure and blessed. And permitted pleasure is elevated when it is tasted in holy places and in harmony with dharma. Telling too is that the beauty of the world -- mountains, waters, groves -- appears as a gift granted for a brief span to exiles. Thus the scripture shows the generosity of providence toward the righteous; but the thoughtful reader remembers that every earthly delight is fleeting, as fleeting as this happy season itself.
