Here the son, fearsome in appearance, shows humility and devotion. Striking is that his first act is a bow at his parents' feet: for all his might, he begins with reverence, and his strength is crowned with humility. Reverence for elders is the root of all nobility: truly strong is the one who knows how to bow. Striking too is the word "become like their own" (atmabhuta): through devotion and love this half-rakshasa became the Pandavas' own, closer than blood kin. Thus the scripture shows that it is not origin but devotion that makes kin: one who is bound with all the heart to the righteous and serves them becomes to them as their own soul — and this is a reflection of the devotee's love that enters the family of the Lord.
