रमयन्ती तथा भीमं तत्र तत्र मनोजवा ॥
प्रजज्ञे राक्षसी पुत्रं भीमसेनान् महाबलम् ॥

महेष्वासं महावीर्यं महासत्त्वं महाभुजम् ॥
महाजवं महाकायं महामायम् अरिंदमम् ॥
अमानुषं मानुषजं भीमवेगं महाबलम् ॥
यः पिशाचान् अतीवान्यान् बभूवाति स मानुषान् ॥

maheṣvāsaṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahāsattvaṃ mahābhujam ||
mahājavaṃ mahākāyaṃ mahāmāyam ariṃdamam ||
amānuṣaṃ mānuṣajaṃ bhīmavegaṃ mahābalam ||
yaḥ piśācān atīvānyān babhūvāti sa mānuṣān ||
Thus delighting Bhima here and there, swift as thought, the rakshasi bore from Bhimasena a mighty son — misshapen-eyed, wide-mouthed, with ears like stakes, dreadful, terrible in form, with copper-red lips, sharp-fanged, mighty; a great archer, of great valor, great might, mighty-armed, swift, huge of body, possessed of great magical power, a subduer of foes; inhuman, though born of a human, terrible in speed, mighty — one who surpassed even other pishachas, and men.

From the union of the righteous one and the transformed rakshasi is born a fearsome yet valiant son. Striking is the union of a terrifying form with great virtues: hideous in appearance, he is nonetheless "a great archer, of great valor," a subduer of foes — outer ugliness does not diminish inner strength and nobility. Valor and devotion do not depend on comeliness of form: the heart is worth more than the face. Striking too is his twofold nature — "inhuman, though born of a human" — in him the might of the rakshasa and the spirit of his Pandava father come together. Thus the scripture shows that good can arise even from a mingling of lineages sanctified by dharma; and the fearsome Ghatotkacha will become a faithful protector of the righteous.
