तद् आदाय च लुब्धस्य लाभाल् लोभो व्यवर्धत ॥
तथा हि सर्वम् आदाय राज्यम् अस्य जिहीर्षति ॥
हीनस्य करणैः सर्वैर् उच्छ्वासपरमस्य च ॥
यतमानो ऽपि तद् राज्यं न शशाकेति नः श्रुतम् ॥

Here the insatiability of greed lays itself bare — along with its limit before fate. It is significant that a double truth is stated: "gain only makes greed grow," and yet what is destined for the king cannot be taken from him. Here appears the truth that greed is boundless, but what is fore-ordained is untouchable: what is guarded from above cannot be stolen. Thus scripture shows both the futility of greed and the power of fate; yet Karna bends this toward disregard for dharma.
