एवं विद्वन्न् उपादत्स्व मन्त्रिणां साध्व् असाधुताम् ॥
दुष्टानां चैव बोद्धव्यम् अदुष्टानां च भाषितम् ॥

Here the slanderer hypocritically calls for 'discernment' between the good and the wicked. It is telling that Karna, having himself given wicked counsel, urges that evil counselors be distinguished from good ones — turning the accusation against the righteous Bhishma and Drona. This is the familiar ploy of the deceitful: to blacken the honest while posing as a champion of truth. Thus the verse reveals a perverted call to 'discernment'; and slander dresses itself in the garments of prudence.
