युधिष्ठिर उवाच
सुन्दोपसुन्दाव् असुरौ कस्य पुत्रौ महामुने ॥
उत्पन्नश् च कथं भेदः कथं चान्योन्यम् अघ्नताम् ॥
अप्सरा देवकन्या वा कस्य चैषा तिलोत्तमा ॥
यस्याः कामेन संमत्तौ जघ्नतुस् तौ परस्परम् ॥
एतत् सर्वं यथावृत्तं विस्तरेण तपोधन ॥
श्रोतुम् इच्छामहे विप्र परं कौतूहलं हि नः ॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
sundopasundāv asurau kasya putrau mahāmune ||
utpannaś ca kathaṃ bhedaḥ kathaṃ cānyonyam aghnatām ||
apsarā devakanyā vā kasya caiṣā tilottamā ||
yasyāḥ kāmena saṃmattau jaghnatus tau parasparam ||
etat sarvaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ vistareṇa tapodhana ||
śrotum icchāmahe vipra paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ ||
Yudhishthira said: "The asuras Sunda and Upasunda -- whose sons are they, O great sage? And how did the discord arise, and how did they kill each other? Is that Tilottama an apsara or a daughter of the gods, and whose is she, out of passion for whom, gone mad, they killed each other? All this, just as it happened, in detail, O rich in austerity, we wish to hear, O brahmin, for our curiosity is great."

Here the king longs to draw a lesson from the instructive tale. It is telling that Yudhishthira is not content with the command alone but wishes to grasp the example too: the wise learn from others' misfortunes so as not to repeat them. Here curiosity directed toward dharma shows itself. Thus the scripture shows the Pandavas' readiness to heed the warning; and the question opens the tale of Sunda and Upasunda.
