Here evil reaches its summit -- and therein lies its danger. It is significant that the brothers, having become "men whose purpose was accomplished," no longer know any obstacle: at the height of impunity, carelessness ripens. Here is revealed the truth that unlimited fortune lulls vigilance and prepares a fall. Thus the scripture shows the fullness of their triumph; and the very absence of rivals will become the threshold of their destruction at their own hands.
