एवम् उक्ताः महात्मानः नारदेन महर्षिणाevam uktāḥ mahātmānaḥ nāradena maharṣiṇāthus instructed by the great sage Narada, those great souls,
समयं चक्रिरे राजन् ते अन्योन्येन समागताःsamayaṃ cakrire rājan te anyonyena samāgatāḥmade a pact, O king, coming together with one another,
समक्षं तस्य देवर्षेः नारदस्य अमितौजसःsamakṣaṃ tasya devarṣeḥ nāradasya amitaujasaḥin the presence of that divine sage Narada of measureless power:
द्रौपद्या नः सह आसीनम् अन्यः अन्यं यः अभिदर्शयेत्draupadyā naḥ saha āsīnam anyaḥ anyaṃ yaḥ abhidarśayet"whichever of us finds another sitting together with Draupadi,
सः नः द्वादश वर्षाणि ब्रह्मचारी वने वसेत्saḥ naḥ dvādaśa varṣāṇi brahmacārī vane vasetshall dwell with us as a celibate ascetic in the forest for twelve years";

Here the Pandavas, unlike the asuras, wisely guard themselves with a pact. It is telling that they willingly bind themselves to a strict vow for the sake of brotherly harmony: where the asuras gave passion free rein, the Pandavas set a barrier against it. Here the power of self-restraint reveals itself, safeguarding unity. So the scripture shows the Pandavas' prudence; and their vow stands as a shield against the very calamity that destroyed Sunda and Upasunda.
