ह्रियते गोधनं क्षुद्रैर् नृशंसैर् अकृतात्मभिः ॥
प्रसह्य वो ऽस्माद् विषयाद् अभिधावत पाण्डवाः ॥
ब्राह्मणस्य प्रमत्तस्य हविर् ध्वाङ्क्षैर् विलुप्यते ॥
शार्दूलस्य गुहां शून्यां नीचः क्रोष्टाभिमर्शति ॥
ब्राह्मणस्वे हृते चोरैर् धर्मार्थे च विलोपिते ॥
रोरूयमाणे च मयि क्रियताम् अस्त्रधारणम् ॥
hriyate godhanaṃ kṣudrair nṛśaṃsair akṛtātmabhiḥ ||
prasahya vo 'smād viṣayād abhidhāvata pāṇḍavāḥ ||
brāhmaṇasya pramattasya havir dhvāṅkṣair vilupyate ||
śārdūlasya guhāṃ śūnyāṃ nīcaḥ kroṣṭābhimarśati ||
brāhmaṇasve hṛte corair dharmārthe ca vilopite ||
rorūyamāṇe ca mayi kriyatām astradhāraṇam ||
The brahmin said: "My wealth of cattle is being carried off by base, cruel, unrestrained men! By force, from within your own domain, it is taken; pursue them, O Pandavas! From a heedless brahmin the sacrificial offering is plundered by crows; a base jackal creeps up to the empty den of a tiger! When a brahmin's property is stolen by thieves and the means of dharma destroyed, and while I cry out — let your bearing of weapons now be put to use!"

Here the brahmin's outcry reminds the king of the meaning of the sword. Telling is the phrase: "let the bearing of weapons be put to use" — the weapon of a kshatriya is given not for adornment, but for the defense of the defenseless. Telling too is the image of "the jackal in the tiger's den": the base grow bold where the strong delay. Wrong left unchecked shames the protector. Thus scripture shows the call to duty; and the king's weapon demands its own use.
