जनमेजय उवाच
किमर्थं शार्ङ्गकान् अग्निर् न ददाह तथागते ॥
तस्मिन् वने दह्यमाने ब्रह्मन्न् एतद् वदाशु मे ॥
अदाहे ह्य् अश्वसेनस्य दानवस्य मयस्य च ॥
कारणं कीर्तितं ब्रह्मञ् शार्ङ्गकानां न कीर्तितम् ॥
तद् एतद् अद्भुतं ब्रह्मञ् शार्ङ्गानाम् अविनाशनम् ॥
कीर्तयस्वाग्निसंमर्दे कथं ते न विनाशिताः ॥
janamejaya uvāca
kimarthaṃ śārṅgakān agnir na dadāha tathāgate ||
tasmin vane dahyamāne brahmann etad vadāśu me ||
adāhe hy aśvasenasya dānavasya mayasya ca ||
kāraṇaṃ kīrtitaṃ brahmañ śārṅgakānāṃ na kīrtitam ||
tad etad adbhutaṃ brahmañ śārṅgānām avināśanam ||
kīrtayasvāgnisaṃmarde kathaṃ te na vināśitāḥ ||
Janamejaya said: "Why did the fire not burn the shārṅgakas, when that forest was burning? Tell me quickly; for the reason has been told for the non-burning of Ashvasena and the danava Maya, but not for the shārṅgakas; tell me that wondrous thing -- the non-destruction of the shārṅgas: how did they not perish in the onslaught of the fire?"

Here the listener longs to learn of the deliverance of small creatures. It is telling that Janamejaya cares even for the fate of fledglings: a good heart is curious about mercy shown even to the least. Thus it becomes clear that the story of the birds' rescue deserves no less attention than the tale of heroes. So the scripture unfolds the king's question; and the answer will disclose the wondrous story of Mandapala.
