Here Agni is praised as the support of sacrifice and of the path to the eternal. It is telling that through him -- the bearer of oblations -- the righteous attain the eternal path: fire binds earth to heaven. Thus it is disclosed that sacrifice, sanctified by Agni, is a ladder to what is higher. So the scripture reveals Agni's place in dharma; and this praise of him is itself a plea for mercy.
