Here a father's love asks only for the salvation of his children. It is significant that Mandapala, free to choose any gift, asks only for mercy toward his sons: for a parent, no blessing is dearer than the life of his offspring. Here we see that true love is not concerned for itself, but for those it loves. Thus the scripture reveals a father's plea; and Agni promises to grant it.
