पार्थम् आमन्त्र्य गोविन्दःpārtham āmantrya govindaḥhaving taken leave of Partha, Govinda,
परिष्वज्य च पीडितम्pariṣvajya ca pīḍitamand having embraced [him] tightly,
युधिष्ठिरम् पूजयित्वाyudhiṣṭhiram pūjayitvāhaving honored Yudhishthira,
भीमसेनम् यमौ तथाbhīmasenam yamau tathāBhimasena and the twins likewise,
परिष्वक्तः भृशम् ताभ्याम्pariṣvaktaḥ bhṛśam tābhyāmtightly embraced by those
यमाभ्याम् अभिवादितःyamābhyām abhivāditaḥtwins, greeted;
ततः तैः संविदम् कृत्वाtataḥ taiḥ saṃvidam kṛtvāthen, having made an agreement [for a meeting] with them,

निवर्तयित्वा च तदाnivartayitvā ca tadāand having turned back then
पाण्डवान् स-पद-अनुगान्pāṇḍavān sa-pada-anugānthe Pandavas with their retinue,
स्वाम् पुरीम् प्रययौ कृष्णःsvām purīm prayayau kṛṣṇaḥKrishna set out for his own city,
पुरंदरः इव अपरःpuraṃdaraḥ iva aparaḥlike a second Purandara [Indra].

Here the parting is full of tenderness, yet not of hopeless sorrow: an agreement is made for a future meeting. It is significant that the Lord Himself turns His devotees back, not letting them follow Him without measure: His love safeguards both their duty and their good. This reveals that separation from the Lord is not rejection but ordering — each has his own place in His design. Thus scripture shows a good conclusion to the farewell; and the Pandavas follow Him with their eyes.
