श्रीभगवान् उवाच
काम्यानां कर्मणां न्यासं संन्यासं कवयो विदुः ॥
सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं प्राहुस् त्यागं विचक्षणाः ॥
त्याज्यं दोषवद् इत्य् एके कर्म प्राहुर् मनीषिणः ॥
यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यम् इति चापरे ॥
निश्चयं शृणु मे तत्र त्यागे भरतसत्तम ॥
त्यागो हि पुरुषव्याघ्र त्रिविधः संप्रकीर्तितः ॥
यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यं कार्यम् एव तत् ॥
यज्ञो दानं तपश् चैव पावनानि मनीषिणाम् ॥
एतान्य् अपि तु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलानि च ॥
कर्तव्यानीति मे पार्थ निश्चितं मतम् उत्तमम् ॥
śrībhagavān uvāca
kāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ nyāsaṃ saṃnyāsaṃ kavayo viduḥ ||
sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṃ prāhus tyāgaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ ||
tyājyaṃ doṣavad ity eke karma prāhur manīṣiṇaḥ ||
yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyam iti cāpare ||
niścayaṃ śṛṇu me tatra tyāge bharatasattama ||
tyāgo hi puruṣavyāghra trividhaḥ saṃprakīrtitaḥ ||
yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyaṃ kāryam eva tat ||
yajño dānaṃ tapaś caiva pāvanāni manīṣiṇām ||
etāny api tu karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalāni ca ||
kartavyānīti me pārtha niścitaṃ matam uttamam ||
Shri Bhagavan said: "The wise know as sannyasa the giving up of actions performed out of desire, and the discerning call tyaga the relinquishment of the fruits of all actions. Some thinkers say that action should be given up as something flawed; others say that sacrifice, charity, and austerity should not be given up. Hear now My firm conclusion about renunciation, O best of the Bharatas: tyaga, O tiger among men, is proclaimed to be of three kinds. The actions of sacrifice, charity, and austerity must not be given up; they must be performed, for sacrifice, charity, and austerity purify the wise. But even these actions, O Partha, must be performed with attachment and fruits given up. This is My final and supreme conviction."

Krishna does not teach flight from duty. He purifies the very notion of renunciation: what must be given up is not sacred action itself but the desire to own its fruit and to build one's false dignity upon it.
