"Now hear from Me, O best of the Bharatas, about happiness of three kinds. The happiness in which one takes delight through practice and reaches the end of suffering, which at first is like poison but in the end is like nectar, arises from the clarity of the spiritual intellect and is called sattvic. Happiness that arises from the contact of the senses with their objects, which at first seems like nectar but in the end is like poison, is regarded as rajasic. Happiness that deludes the soul from beginning to end, born of sleep, laziness, and negligence, is declared tamasic. There is no being, neither on earth nor in heaven among the gods, free from these three gunas born of prakriti."

Happiness reveals the direction of consciousness. Goodness demands discipline and seems difficult at first, yet leads to purity; passion is sweet at the start and bitter at the end; darkness disguises stupor as peace.
