एवं सत्यरथश् चोक्त्वा सत्यधर्मा च भारत ॥
सत्यवर्मा च सत्येषुः सत्यकर्मा तथैव च ॥
सहिता भ्रातरः पञ्च रथानाम् अयुतेन च ॥
न्यवर्तन्त महाराज कृत्वा शपथम् आहवे ॥
मालवास् तुण्डिकेराश् च रथानाम् अयुतैस् त्रिभिः ॥
सुशर्मा च नरव्याघ्रस् त्रिगर्तः प्रस्थलाधिपः ॥
माचेल्लकैर् ललित्थैश् च सहितो मद्रकैर् अपि ॥
रथानाम् अयुतेनैव सो ऽशपद् भ्रातृभिः सह ॥
नानाजनपदेभ्यश् च रथानाम् अयुतं पुनः ॥
समुत्थितं विशिष्टानां संशपार्थम् उपागतम् ॥

suśarmā ca naravyāghras trigartaḥ prasthalādhipaḥ ||
mācellakair lalitthaiś ca sahito madrakair api ||
rathānām ayutenaiva so 'śapad bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ||
nānājanapadebhyaś ca rathānām ayutaṃ punaḥ ||
samutthitaṃ viśiṣṭānāṃ saṃśapārtham upāgatam ||
Having spoken thus, Satyaratha, Satyadharman, O Bharata, Satyavarman, Satyeshu, and Satyakarman — five brothers together, with ten thousand chariots, set out for battle, O great king, having given a deadly oath. The Malavas and Tundikeras with thirty thousand chariots, and Sushaman, the man-tiger, ruler of Trigarta, king of Prasthala, together with the Machellakas, Lalitthas, and Madrakas, with exactly ten thousand chariots, took the vow along with his brothers; and further, from various lands, ten thousand distinguished warriors on chariots gathered, having come for the common oath.

The names of the five brothers all begin with "Satya" — "truth": a bitter irony, for these "truthful" ones doom themselves to death for untruth. So too a good name can cloak an unworthy deed. Countless thousands gather "for a common vow": multitude and pomp do not sanctify a cause — men gather for untruth as readily as for truth. The verse teaches that a virtuous name does not vouch for the virtue of its bearer; that a wealth of allies and the solemnity of an oath do not testify to rightness; and that the more numerous the self-renunciation given over to untruth, the more abundant the wasted sacrifice.
