युधिष्ठिर उवाच
श्रुतम् एतत् त्वया तात यद् द्रोणस्य चिकीर्षितम् ॥
यथा तद् अनृतं तस्य भवेत् तद्वत् समाचर ॥
द्रोणो हि बलवाञ् शूरः कृतास्त्रश् च जितश्रमः ॥
प्रतिज्ञातं च तेनैतद् ग्रहणं मे महारथ ॥
अर्जुन उवाच
अयं वै सत्यजिद् राजन्न् अद्य ते रक्षिता युधि ॥
ध्रियमाणे हि पाञ्चाल्ये नाचार्यः कामम् आप्स्यति ॥
हते तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे रणे सत्यजिति प्रभो ॥
सर्वैर् अपि समेतैर् वा न स्थातव्यं कथं चन ॥

hate tu puruṣavyāghre raṇe satyajiti prabho ||
sarvair api sametair vā na sthātavyaṃ kathaṃ cana ||
[Yudhishthira:] You have heard, dear one, what Drona has planned; act so that it turns out futile for him. For Drona is mighty, a hero, versed in [celestial] weapons, and untiring; and he has sworn this capture of me, O mighty chariot-warrior. This Satyajit, the prince, will today be your bulwark in battle; for as long as this Panchala [Satyajit] lives, the teacher [Drona] will not attain his aim. But if this man-tiger Satyajit is slain in battle, O lord, then under no circumstances should you remain there, even together with everyone.

Yudhishthira does not hold Arjuna back, yet he does not remain without protection either: the wisdom here lies in setting up one guardian while releasing another. He appoints Satyajit as his bulwark — and prudently sets a limit: 'if he falls, do not remain.' Thus the righteous man joins fidelity to duty (releasing Arjuna to the challenge) with prudent caution (securing his own protection). The verse teaches that vigilance does not oppose trust but completes it; that the wise man, losing one support, provides another in advance and knows when to withdraw; and that caution joined to faithfulness to dharma is not faintheartedness but mature prudence.
