कच्चिन् न निहतः शेते सौभद्रः परवीरहा ॥
लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं जातं सिंहम् इवाद्रिषु ॥
उपेन्द्रसदृशं ब्रूत कथम् आयोधने हतः ॥

"Does not the son of Subhadra lie slain, the slayer of enemy heroes, the mighty archer who many times in battle broke the foemen's array? Red-eyed, mighty-armed, [like] a lion born in the mountains, like Upendra — tell me, how was he slain in the fray?"

The question "katham… hataḥ", "how was he slain?", is repeated twice — a question in which hope has already broken. The images "siṃham iva adriṣu… upendrasadṛśam", "a lion born in the mountains… like Upendra", raise the boy to the level of Vishnu-Krishna, his own grandfather through his mother: his very nature seemed unconquerable. It is telling that the father asks not "was he killed" but "how was he killed" — for the fall of one so god-like is conceivable only through deceit. The verse teaches that when a godlike one falls, the mind seeks not the fact itself but the means — for by fair means such a one could not be overcome.
