दुःखेन महताविष्टो युधिष्ठिरम् अपृच्छत ॥
कच्चित् स कदनं कृत्वा परेषां पाण्डुनन्दन ॥
स्वर्गतो ऽभिमुखः संख्ये युध्यमानो नरर्षभः ॥

Thus wailing repeatedly, like a merchant whose vessel is broken, seized by great sorrow, he questioned Yudhishthira: "Is it indeed so, that he, having made a massacre among the foes, O son of Pandu, ascended to heaven — facing the foe in battle, fighting, that bull among men?"

The image of "bhinnapotaḥ vaṇik," "a merchant whose vessel is broken," is exact: all the wealth of love is sunk at once. And yet Arjuna's first question is not how he died, but whether righteously: "abhimukhaḥ saṃkhye yudhyamānaḥ," "facing the foe, fighting." For a kshatriya, more important than death itself is meeting it without turning one's face away. It is telling that even in the depths of grief the father seeks comfort in his son's righteousness, not in vengeance. The verse teaches that faith turns the first question of grief from "why" to "was it worthy," and in this already begins to heal.
