"…and unassailable Dhrishtadyumna, and unvanquished Shikhandin, the Ashmakas and the Kekayas, and Kshatradharman son of Somaka, and the Chedi, and Chekitana, and the mighty son of Kashi, the sons of Draupadi and Virata, and Drupada the great chariot-warrior — who, wishing to live in this world, would fight these tamers of foes, who display and annihilate with divine weapons?"

The long roster of the Pandavas' heroes — Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandin, Drupada and many more — Dhritarashtra offers as a measure of his own side's doom: "kaḥ etān jātu yudhyeta… jijīviṣuḥ", "who, wishing to live, would fight them?" It is telling that the blind king soberly assesses the enemy's strength, but this sobriety has come too late. The verse teaches that a correct assessment of the situation, arriving only in the hour of calamity, is fruitless: wisdom not applied in time turns into mere regret; and it is bitter to perceive the opponent's invincibility only when nothing can any longer be mended.
