तान् दृष्ट्वा पततस् तूर्णम् अङ्कुशैर् अभिचोदितान् ॥

सिंहनादेन महता नरसिंहो धनंजयः ॥
गजानीकम् अमित्राणाम् अभितो व्यधमच् छरैः ॥
महोर्मिणम् इवोद्धूतं श्वसनेन महार्णवम् ॥
किरीटी तद् गजानीकं प्राविशन् मकरो यथा ॥
tān dṛṣṭvā patatas tūrṇam aṅkuśair abhicoditān ||
vyālambahastān saṃrabdhān sapakṣān iva parvatān ||
siṃhanādena mahatā narasiṃho dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
gajānīkam amitrāṇām abhito vyadhamac charaiḥ ||
mahormiṇam ivoddhūtaṃ śvasanena mahārṇavam ||
kirīṭī tad gajānīkaṃ prāviśan makaro yathā ||
Having seen them, swiftly advancing, goaded by hooks, with trunks hanging, enraged, like winged mountains — with a great lion's roar the man-lion Dhananjaya scattered the enemies' array of elephants with arrows from every side. As into the great ocean, churned by the wind into towering waves, the Diademed One entered that array of elephants, like a makara.

Two images meet: the elephants are «sapakṣān iva parvatān», winged mountains, while Arjuna is «makaraḥ», a sea monster entering the ocean-army. «Narasiṃhaḥ», the man-lion — he does not fear the mass but cleaves through it. It is telling that a single man, but one overshadowed by God, is set against this dreadful array. The verse teaches that even a mass like winged mountains is powerless before the righteous one who enters it as a makara enters the waves: for God stands behind him; and the inequality of strength is illusory where the Lord is on one side and, on the other, only a mass devoid of truth.
