द्रोणस् तु पञ्चविंशत्या श्वेतवाहनम् आर्दयत् ॥
वासुदेवं च सप्तत्या बाह्वोर् उरसि चाशुगैः ॥
पार्थस् तु प्रहसन् धीमान् आचार्यं स शरौघिणम् ॥
विसृजन्तं शितान् बाणान् अवारयत तं युधि ॥
अथ तौ वध्यमानौ तु द्रोणेन रथसत्तमौ ॥
आवर्जयेतां दुर्धर्षं युगान्ताग्निम् इवोत्थितम् ॥
droṇas tu pañcaviṃśatyā śvetavāhanam ārdayat ||
vāsudevaṃ ca saptatyā bāhvor urasi cāśugaiḥ ||
pārthas tu prahasan dhīmān ācāryaṃ sa śaraughiṇam ||
visṛjantaṃ śitān bāṇān avārayata taṃ yudhi ||
atha tau vadhyamānau tu droṇena rathasattamau ||
āvarjayetāṃ durdharṣaṃ yugāntāgnim ivotthitam ||
Drona pressed the white-horsed one with twenty-five arrows, and Vasudeva with seventy swift arrows in the arms and chest. Partha, laughing, wise, warded off in battle the teacher, who poured forth a torrent of arrows, loosing sharp shafts. Then the two, best of charioteers, being struck by Drona, turned aside from the irresistible one, as from the risen fire of the world's end.

Even Krishna and Arjuna "āvarjayetām durdharṣam," turn aside from Drona, "as from the fire of dissolution." This turning aside is not fear but recognition: the teacher cannot be overcome head-on, and their goal is not him but Jayadratha. Telling is that even the Lord himself does not consider it shameful to go around an irresistible obstacle. The verse teaches the wisdom of avoiding a needless clash: not every obstacle must be crushed — some are to be gone around for the sake of the main goal. To go around an unconquerable teacher for the sake of a vow is not retreat but the sober subordination of means to end.
