Yet those two, the bulls among men, held back by Kritavarman, found no passage through amid the ranks of Dhritarashtra's men, however they strove. But the swift white-horsed one, crushing the ranks in battle, the slayer of foes, did not slay Kritavarman, though he had overtaken him.

It is telling: Arjuna "na avadhīt kṛtavarmāṇaṃ prāptam api", "did not slay Kritavarman, though he had overtaken him". Even Krishna's counsel not to be gentle he fulfills only to the measure the goal requires: he lays low a kinsman but does not finish him. His aim is Jayadratha, not the slaughter of all. The verse teaches that the righteous warrior does not multiply deaths beyond need: having the power to kill, he spares one whose death would not serve the purpose; and restraint even in the midst of battle is a sign that duty, not thirst for blood, moves him, and that he strikes only where it is necessary.
