lokavismāpanam abhūt samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam ||
Parrying the arrows swiftly with the speed of his own arrows, the Pandava advanced here and there, slaying the great warriors. And the two, made bereft of arms and heads by the floods of Phalguna's arrows, fell upon the earth like trees toppled by the wind. And the death of Shrutayus, and the slaying of Achyutayus, were a wonder to the world, like the drying up of the ocean.

"Lokavismāpanam... samudrasya iva śoṣaṇam," "a wonder to the world, like the drying up of the ocean": the fall of those deemed unconquerable strikes one as unthinkable -- an ocean run dry. Telling is it that only just before they had exulted over the 'slain' Arjuna -- and now they themselves have fallen. The verse teaches of the reversal awaiting the unrighteous in their triumph: their rejoicing over an illusory victory turns into their own destruction within the same hour; and whoever gloats over the fall of the righteous will soon fall himself -- a wonder to the world, like a dried-up ocean, for the triumph of lawlessness is illusory and fleeting.
