The roll of single combats begins: each of the leading Pandavas meets his adversaries. Bhima is surrounded by Duryodhana's brothers — the very men on whom he had sworn vengeance. It is telling that the battle resolves into predestined pairs. The verse teaches that in the great reckoning each meets his own: fate arranges the combatants in pairs, matching debtor to creditor in blood; the general chaos of the fight is in truth composed of countless preordained personal encounters, where each must play out his allotted part.
