śikhaṇḍinaṃ yājñaseniṃ rundhānam aparājitam ||
bāhlikaḥ pratisaṃyattaḥ parākrāntam avārayat ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ ca pāñcālyaṃ krūraiḥ sārdhaṃ prabhadrakaiḥ ||
āvantyaḥ saha sauvīraiḥ kruddharūpam avārayat ||
Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti attacked Virata the Matsya, the two great archers rising up in battle for their friend's sake, giving up their lives. Bahlika, arraying himself against Shikhandin, son of Yajnasena, who pressed on unconquered and valiant, held him back. And Dhrishtadyumna the Panchala, together with the fierce Prabhadrakas, was held back by the man of Avanti together with the Sauviras — Dhrishtadyumna, of wrathful aspect.

Twice the words "mitrarthe… pranan tyaktva" ring out — for a friend's sake, sparing not their lives: the warriors fight not for themselves but for an ally, ready to die. Friendship and loyalty move them as much as duty does. It is telling that even in the wrongful camp loyalty to friendship shines. The verse teaches that self-sacrifice for a friend is noble wherever it appears: to give one's life "mitrarthe", for a friend, is a high virtue; and the tragedy is that such loyalty perishes in strife, where it might instead have flowered in peaceful service.
