सा सीता भ्राजते तस्य रथम् आस्थाय मारिष ॥
सर्वबीजविरूढेव यथा सीता श्रिया वृता ॥

"On the top of the banner of Shalya, king of Madra, like a tongue of flame, we beheld a golden plow, matchless, beautiful. That plow shines upon him, fixed upon his chariot, O venerable one, as if sprouted with every seed, like Sita [the furrow], wrapped in bounty."

Shalya's emblem is the golden plow-Sita, the furrow, sign of fertility and prosperity: "sarvabījavirūḍhā iva", as if sprouted with every seed. Sorrowful is the contradiction: a sign promising life and harvest raised over a field where not grain but death is sown. It is telling that the emblem of abundance shades a chariot of slaughter. The verse teaches that man strives to bear signs of blessing even where he does the opposite; but a furrow cut on the field of battle yields no shoots, only the bodies of the fallen.
