स्मयन्न् एव तु तान् वीरान् द्रोणः प्रत्यग्रहीत् स्वयम् ॥
अतिथीन् आगतान् यद्वत् सलिलेनासनेन च ॥
तर्पितास् ते शरैस् तस्य भारद्वाजस्य धन्विनः ॥
आतिथेयगृहं प्राप्य नृपते ऽतिथयो यथा ॥
भारद्वाजं च ते सर्वे न शेकुः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥
मध्यंदिनम् अनुप्राप्तं सहस्रांशुम् इव प्रभो ॥
तांस् तु सर्वान् महेष्वासान् द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥
अतापयच् छरव्रातैर् गभस्तिभिर् इवांशुमान् ॥
smayann eva tu tān vīrān droṇaḥ pratyagrahīt svayam ||
atithīn āgatān yadvat salilenāsanena ca ||
tarpitās te śarais tasya bhāradvājasya dhanvinaḥ ||
ātitheyagṛhaṃ prāpya nṛpate 'tithayo yathā ||
bhāradvājaṃ ca te sarve na śekuḥ prativīkṣitum ||
madhyaṃdinam anuprāptaṃ sahasrāṃśum iva prabho ||
tāṃs tu sarvān maheṣvāsān droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
atāpayac charavrātair gabhastibhir ivāṃśumān ||
"Merely smiling, Drona himself received those heroes, as arriving guests are received -- with water and a seat. They were gratified by the arrows of Bharadvaja's son, the archer, as guests, having come to a hospitable house, o king. And they all could not even look at Bharadvaja's son, as at the thousand-rayed sun that has reached midday, o lord. All those great archers, Drona, foremost of arms-bearers, scorched with flights of arrows, as the sun does with its rays."

A bitter irony of war: Drona 'atithīn... salilena āsanena ca' receives his enemies as guests, but his 'hospitality' is arrows, and his 'water and seat' are wounds. It is telling that the rite of hospitality, a sacred thing of peace, is turned into an image of killing. The verse teaches that war perverts the very best customs, dressing slaughter in the likeness of welcome; and where friendliness ought to flow, blood is spilled instead -- such is the corruption that strife brings into the sacred customs of humankind.
