तस्य त्वम् एवं संकल्पं न वृथा कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
धनंजयस्य वार्ष्णेय मम भीमस्य चोभयोः ॥
यच् चापि तीर्थानि चरन्न् अगच्छं द्वारकां प्रति ॥
तत्राहम् अपि ते भक्तिम् अर्जुनं प्रति दृष्टवान् ॥
न तत् सौहृदम् अन्येषु मया शैनेय लक्षितम् ॥
यथा त्वम् अस्मान् भजसे वर्तमानान् उपप्लवे ॥
सो ऽभिजात्या च भक्त्या च सख्यस्याचार्यकस्य च ॥
सौहृदस्य च वीर्यस्य कुलीनत्वस्य माधव ॥
सत्यस्य च महाबाहो अनुकम्पार्थम् एव च ॥
अनुरूपं महेष्वास कर्म त्वं कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
tasya tvam evaṃ saṃkalpaṃ na vṛthā kartum arhasi ||
dhanaṃjayasya vārṣṇeya mama bhīmasya cobhayoḥ ||
yac cāpi tīrthāni carann agacchaṃ dvārakāṃ prati ||
tatrāham api te bhaktim arjunaṃ prati dṛṣṭavān ||
na tat sauhṛdam anyeṣu mayā śaineya lakṣitam ||
yathā tvam asmān bhajase vartamānān upaplave ||
so 'bhijātyā ca bhaktyā ca sakhyasyācāryakasya ca ||
sauhṛdasya ca vīryasya kulīnatvasya mādhava ||
satyasya ca mahābāho anukampārtham eva ca ||
anurūpaṃ maheṣvāsa karma tvaṃ kartum arhasi ||
"You must not bring to nothing this intention of Dhananjaya's, O Varshneya — nor, likewise, that of me and Bhima, both. And when, wandering among the holy places, I made my way to Dvaraka, there too I saw your devotion to Arjuna. I have observed no such warmth in others, O descendant of Shini, as that which you show us, who dwelt in Upaplavya. Yudhishthira lists the grounds of his appeal — abhijātya, bhakti, sakhya, ācāryaka, sauhṛda, vīrya, kulīnatva: noble birth, devotion, friendship, discipleship, warmth, valor, nobility. The appeal rests not on bare need alone but on the full measure of the one appealed to. It is telling that the devotion shown in the days of exile, in Upaplavya, is recalled. The verse teaches that loyalty proven in days of hardship is the most precious measure of friendship: whoever was devoted in time of need is rightly called upon in the hour of trial, for love that has been tested is more dependable than any other.
