एतद् आलोक्यते सैन्यम् आवन्त्यानां महाप्रभम् ॥
अस्यानन्तरतस् त्व् एतद् दाक्षिणात्यं महाबलम् ॥
तदनन्तरम् एतच् च बाह्लिकानां बलं महत् ॥
बाह्लिकाभ्याशतो युक्तं कर्णस्यापि महद् बलम् ॥
अन्योन्येन हि सैन्यानि भिन्नान्य् एतानि सारथे ॥
अन्योन्यं समुपाश्रित्य न त्यक्ष्यन्ति रणाजिरम् ॥
एतद् अन्तरम् आसाद्य चोदयाश्वान् प्रहृष्टवत् ॥
मध्यमं जवम् आस्थाय वह माम् अत्र सारथे ॥
etad ālokyate sainyam āvantyānāṃ mahāprabham ||
asyānantaratas tv etad dākṣiṇātyaṃ mahābalam ||
tadanantaram etac ca bāhlikānāṃ balaṃ mahat ||
bāhlikābhyāśato yuktaṃ karṇasyāpi mahad balam ||
anyonyena hi sainyāni bhinnāny etāni sārathe ||
anyonyaṃ samupāśritya na tyakṣyanti raṇājiram ||
etad antaram āsādya codayāśvān prahṛṣṭavat ||
madhyamaṃ javam āsthāya vaha mām atra sārathe ||
"Here is seen the greatly shining army of the Avantyas; and immediately beyond it, this mighty southern army; and following that, the great army of the Bahlikas; and adjoining the Bahlikas, Karna's great army too. For these armies, charioteer, are disjoined from one another, but, leaning on one another, they will not leave the field of battle. Having reached this gap, urge on the horses joyfully; taking up a moderate speed, carry me there, charioteer."

Satyaki reads the enemy's formation and aims for the "antaram", the gap between the disjoined hosts: wisdom finds the breach where strength rests only on mutual leaning. It is telling that he discerns visible unity from hidden disunity. The verse teaches that even a fearsome multitude has a vulnerable point -- the joint where parts merely prop one another up; the discerning strike not the strongest place but the seam, for once split apart, even a great army loses its strength.
