संजय उवाच
द्रोणं स जित्वा पुरुषप्रवीरस्; तथैव हार्दिक्यमुखांस् त्वदीयान् ॥
प्रहस्य सूतं वचनं बभाषे; शिनिप्रवीरः कुरुपुंगवाग्र्य ॥
निमित्तमात्रं वयम् अत्र सूत; दग्धारयः केशवफल्गुनाभ्याम् ॥
हतान् निहन्मेह नरर्षभेण; वयं सुरेशात्मसमुद्भवेन ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
droṇaṃ sa jitvā puruṣapravīras; tathaiva hārdikyamukhāṃs tvadīyān ||
prahasya sūtaṃ vacanaṃ babhāṣe; śinipravīraḥ kurupuṃgavāgrya ||
nimittamātraṃ vayam atra sūta; dagdhārayaḥ keśavaphalgunābhyām ||
hatān nihanmeha nararṣabheṇa; vayaṃ sureśātmasamudbhavena ||
Having conquered Drona, the heroic man, and likewise your warriors led by Hridika's son, the hero of Shini, laughing, spoke a word to the charioteer, O foremost bull of Kuru: "We are but a pretext here, charioteer -- the enemies are already burned by Keshava and Phalguna; I merely strike down here those already slain by the bull among men, who is a portion of the lord of gods."

The heart of this chapter is nimittamatram vayam -- we are but an instrument, an echo of the Lord's word to Arjuna: be only an instrument. Satyaki's hatan nihanmi, striking down those already struck, points to the true actor -- Keshava and Arjuna (Nara-Narayana, sureshatmasamudbhava). It is telling that the mightiest of warriors disclaims his own merit, seeing himself only as a tool. The verse teaches that the devotee's true humility lies in knowing himself an instrument in the hand of the Lord: victory belongs to Him, and the wise warrior does not claim what is accomplished by His will, but performs his own share without pride.
