तान् अभिद्रवतः सर्वान् समीक्ष्य शिनिपुंगवः ॥
शनैर् याहीति यन्तारम् अब्रवीत् प्रहसन्न् इव ॥
इदम् एति समुद्धूतं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य यद् बलम् ॥
माम् एवाभिमुखं तूर्णं गजाश्वरथपत्तिमत् ॥
नादयन् वै दिशः सर्वा रथघोषेण सारथे ॥
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च कम्पयन् सागरान् अपि ॥
एतद् बलार्णवं तात वारयिष्ये महारणे ॥
पौर्णमास्याम् इवोद्धूतं वेलेव सलिलाशयम् ॥
tān abhidravataḥ sarvān samīkṣya śinipuṃgavaḥ ||
śanair yāhīti yantāram abravīt prahasann iva ||
idam eti samuddhūtaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrasya yad balam ||
mām evābhimukhaṃ tūrṇaṃ gajāśvarathapattimat ||
nādayan vai diśaḥ sarvā rathaghoṣeṇa sārathe ||
pṛthivīṃ cāntarikṣaṃ ca kampayan sāgarān api ||
etad balārṇavaṃ tāta vārayiṣye mahāraṇe ||
paurṇamāsyām ivoddhūtaṃ veleva salilāśayam ||
Having beheld them all charging, the bull [of the] Śini [clan] said to his charioteer, as though laughing, "Drive slowly. Here comes the surging force of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, turned straight [upon] me, swiftly, [with] elephants, horses, chariots, and foot, making all the quarters resound with the roar of chariots, O charioteer, and shaking the earth and the sky and the oceans too. This ocean of an army, O dear one, I shall check [in] great battle, [as] surging at the full moon, like the shore [holds] the sea."

Before an ocean of enemies, Satyaki bids, "śanair yāhi," drive slowly, and smiles: composure in danger marks self-mastery. He conceives of himself as "velā iva," a shore that will hold back the surging sea. It is telling that the fearsomeness of many is met by the unshaken calm of one. The verse teaches that a raging onslaught must be met not with equal rage but with unshakable calm: as a shore, without moving, holds back a swollen sea, so one firm in spirit checks the storm of enemies by his stillness alone.
