न चैव तादृशः कश् चिद् व्यूह आसीद् विशां पते ॥
यादृग् जयद्रथवधे द्रोणेन विहितो ऽभवत् ॥
चण्डवाताभिपन्नानां समुद्राणाम् इव स्वनः ॥
रणे ऽभवद् बलौघानाम् अन्योन्यम् अभिधावताम् ॥
पार्थिवानां समेतानां बहून्य् आसन् नरोत्तम ॥
त्वद्बले पाण्डवानां च सहस्राणि शतानि च ॥
संरब्धानां प्रवीराणां समरे दृढकर्मणाम् ॥
तत्रासीत् सुमहाञ् शब्दस् तुमुलो लोमहर्षणः ॥
na caiva tādṛśaḥ kaś cid vyūha āsīd viśāṃ pate ||
yādṛg jayadrathavadhe droṇena vihito 'bhavat ||
caṇḍavātābhipannānāṃ samudrāṇām iva svanaḥ ||
raṇe 'bhavad balaughānām anyonyam abhidhāvatām ||
pārthivānāṃ sametānāṃ bahūny āsan narottama ||
tvadbale pāṇḍavānāṃ ca sahasrāṇi śatāni ca ||
saṃrabdhānāṃ pravīrāṇāṃ samare dṛḍhakarmaṇām ||
tatrāsīt sumahāñ śabdas tumulo lomaharṣaṇaḥ ||
"And there was no such formation at all, O lord of the peoples, as was arranged by Drona at the slaying of Jayadratha. In the battle there arose, among the flooding hosts charging upon one another, a roar as of oceans overtaken by a furious wind. Of the assembled kings there were many, O best of men, in your army and among the Pandavas -- thousands and hundreds."

Drona's formation had no equal, and the roar of the converging hosts was "samudrāṇām iva svanaḥ" -- like the roar of oceans in a storm. The images of the elements reveal that the strife had passed beyond human measure. It is telling that the skill of a single teacher raised up an unprecedented array. The verse teaches that even the greatest structure of human might remains as perishable as a churning ocean: its grandeur does not undo the fact that all of it is a passing storm, destined to subside.
