धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
तथा गतेषु सैन्येषु तथा कृच्छ्रगतः स्वयम् ॥
कच्चिद् दुर्योधनः सूत नाकार्षीत् पृष्ठतो रणम् ॥
एकस्य च बहूनां च संनिपातो महाहवे ॥
विशेषतो नृपतिना विषमः प्रतिभाति मे ॥
सो ऽत्यन्तसुखसंवृद्धो लक्ष्म्या लोकस्य चेश्वरः ॥
एको बहून् समासाद्य कच्चिन् नासीत् पराङ्मुखः ॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
tathā gateṣu sainyeṣu tathā kṛcchragataḥ svayam ||
kaccid duryodhanaḥ sūta nākārṣīt pṛṣṭhato raṇam ||
ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca saṃnipāto mahāhave ||
viśeṣato nṛpatinā viṣamaḥ pratibhāti me ||
so 'tyantasukhasaṃvṛddho lakṣmyā lokasya ceśvaraḥ ||
eko bahūn samāsādya kaccin nāsīt parāṅmukhaḥ ||
"With the troops in such a state, did Duryodhana himself, fallen into distress, charioteer, perchance not make a stand from behind in the fight? The encounter of one against many in that great battle, especially with the king, seems to me unequal. He, raised in utmost ease, lord of fortune and of the world -- alone, facing many, was he perchance not put to flight?"

The father worries over his pampered son: "atyantasukhasaṃvṛddhaḥ" -- raised in ease, accustomed to fortune, how will he stand alone against many? It is telling that ease and the habit of happiness seem like weakness before a trial. The verse teaches that one raised in comfort is vulnerable in adversity: whoever has known no hardship dreads the first grave trial, and a loving father is right to fear whether the pampered one can bear what he was never trained to bear.
