संजय उवाच
राजन् संग्रामम् आश्चर्यं तव पुत्रस्य भारत ॥
एकस्य च बहूनां च शृणुष्व गदतो ऽद्भुतम् ॥
दुर्योधनेन सहसा पाण्डवी पृतना रणे ॥
नलिनी द्विरदेनेव समन्ताद् विप्रलोडिता ॥
तथा सेनां कृतां दृष्ट्वा तव पुत्रेण कौरव ॥
भीमसेनपुरोगास् तं पाञ्चालाः समुपाद्रवन् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
rājan saṃgrāmam āścaryaṃ tava putrasya bhārata ||
ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca śṛṇuṣva gadato 'dbhutam ||
duryodhanena sahasā pāṇḍavī pṛtanā raṇe ||
nalinī dviradeneva samantād vipraloḍitā ||
tathā senāṃ kṛtāṃ dṛṣṭvā tava putreṇa kaurava ||
bhīmasenapurogās taṃ pāñcālāḥ samupādravan ||
"O king, of the wondrous battle of your son, O descendant of Bharata -- of one against many -- hear the marvel as I tell it. By Duryodhana suddenly the host of the Pandavas in battle was churned up on every side, as a lotus pond by an elephant. Seeing the army thus made by your son, O Kaurava, the Panchalas, led by Bhimasena, rushed upon him."

Against his father's fears, Duryodhana, "nalinī dvirad'eneva", like an elephant a lotus pond, churns up the army of the Pandavas: the pampered one shows unexpected might. It is telling that even one accustomed to ease can rise to the moment in a time of need. The verse teaches that trial reveals in a person what was unforeseen: one thought pampered may, under the weight of adversity, show forth a strength hitherto hidden -- for necessity brings out even what a person did not suspect in himself.
