कौरवान् सहितान् सर्वान् गोग्रहार्थे समागतान् ॥
यो ऽजयन् मत्स्यनगरे दिष्ट्या पार्थः स जीवति ॥
कालकेयसहस्राणि चतुर्दश महारणे ॥
यो ऽवधीद् भुजवीर्येण दिष्ट्या पार्थः स जीवति ॥
गन्धर्वराजं बलिनं दुर्योधनकृतेन वै ॥
जितवान् यो ऽस्त्रवीर्येण दिष्ट्या पार्थः स जीवति ॥
किरीटमाली बलवाञ् श्वेताश्वः कृष्णसारथिः ॥
मम प्रियश् च सततं दिष्ट्या जीवति फल्गुनः ॥
kauravān sahitān sarvān gograhārthe samāgatān ||
yo 'jayan matsyanagare diṣṭyā pārthaḥ sa jīvati ||
kālakeyasahasrāṇi caturdaśa mahāraṇe ||
yo 'vadhīd bhujavīryeṇa diṣṭyā pārthaḥ sa jīvati ||
gandharvarājaṃ balinaṃ duryodhanakṛtena vai ||
jitavān yo 'stravīryeṇa diṣṭyā pārthaḥ sa jīvati ||
kirīṭamālī balavāñ śvetāśvaḥ kṛṣṇasārathiḥ ||
mama priyaś ca satataṃ diṣṭyā jīvati phalgunaḥ ||
"He who overcame all the Kauravas, united, gathered together in the cattle raid in the city of Matsya — by good fortune, that Partha lives. He who slew fourteen thousand Kalakeyas in a great battle by the strength of his arms — by good fortune, that Partha lives. He who overcame the mighty king of the Gandharvas, brought about by Duryodhana's doing, by the strength of his weapons — by good fortune, that Partha lives."

The refrain "diṣṭyā pārthaḥ sa jīvati," by good fortune Partha lives, frames each of these deeds: the joy returns always to one thing — that he is alive. It is telling that the greatest feats are precious to the king not for themselves, but because the one who accomplished them survived. The verse teaches that for one who loves, the beloved's life is dearer than all his victories: the heart is not consoled by his fame but by the fact that he lives — for one loves not the deeds, but the one who did them.
