कच्चिद् दुर्योधनो राजा फल्गुनेन निपातितम् ॥
दृष्ट्वा सैन्धवकं संख्ये शमम् अस्मासु धास्यति ॥

कच्चिद् दुर्योधनो मन्दः शमम् अस्मासु धास्यति ॥
दृष्ट्वा चान्यान् बहून् योधान् पातितान् धरणीतले ॥
कच्चिद् दुर्योधनो मन्दः पश्चात्तापं करिष्यति ॥
kaccid duryodhano rājā phalgunena nipātitam ||
dṛṣṭvā saindhavakaṃ saṃkhye śamam asmāsu dhāsyati ||
dṛṣṭvā vinihatān bhrātṝn bhīmasenena saṃyuge ||
kaccid duryodhano mandaḥ śamam asmāsu dhāsyati ||
dṛṣṭvā cānyān bahūn yodhān pātitān dharaṇītale ||
kaccid duryodhano mandaḥ paścāttāpaṃ kariṣyati ||
"Will King Duryodhana, having seen the Sindhu king felled by Phalguna in battle, make peace with us? Having seen his brothers slain by Bhimasena in battle, will dull-witted Duryodhana make peace with us? And having seen many other warriors felled to the ground, will dull-witted Duryodhana come to repentance?"

Even amid the war Yudhishthira longs for peace: three times he asks, "kaccit... śamam asmāsu dhāsyati" -- will he not make peace? The righteous man never stops hoping for reconciliation. It is telling that the King of Dharma grieves even for his enemies, wishing for their awakening. The verse teaches that one who is truly righteous does not revel in war but, even in its thick, yearns for peace: his heart seeks not the destruction of the enemy but his turning back, for to dharma reconciliation is dearer than victory.
