तं भीमो दशभिर् बाणैः प्रत्यविध्यद् अजिह्मगैः ॥
पुनर् विव्याध विंशत्या शराणां नतपर्वणाम् ॥
कर्णस् तु नवभिर् भीमं विद्ध्वा राजन् स्तनान्तरे ॥
ध्वजम् एकेन विव्याध सायकेन शितेन ह ॥
सायकानां ततः पार्थस् त्रिषष्ट्या प्रत्यविध्यत ॥
तोत्त्रैर् इव महानागं कशाभिर् इव वाजिनम् ॥
taṃ bhīmo daśabhir bāṇaiḥ pratyavidhyad ajihmagaiḥ ||
punar vivyādha viṃśatyā śarāṇāṃ nataparvaṇām ||
karṇas tu navabhir bhīmaṃ viddhvā rājan stanāntare ||
dhvajam ekena vivyādha sāyakena śitena ha ||
sāyakānāṃ tataḥ pārthas triṣaṣṭyā pratyavidhyata ||
tottrair iva mahānāgaṃ kaśābhir iva vājinam ||
Bhima pierced him in return with ten straight-flying arrows, and again pierced him with twenty arrows of smooth joints. Karna, in turn, having pierced Bhima with nine arrows between the breasts, O king, pierced his banner with one sharp arrow. Then the son of Pritha struck him in return with sixty-three arrows — as if with goads a great elephant, as if with whips a horse.

Blow answers blow, count answers count: ten, twenty, nine, sixty-three — a duel of equals knows no easy advantage. It is telling that Karna, a formidable warrior, is likened to a goaded elephant and a lashed horse: Bhima's fury drives him as a goad drives a beast. The verse teaches that in combat between equals, victory belongs not to a single blow but to relentlessness; and yet that relentlessness only multiplies wounds, until the enmity has spent itself.
