धनुषो ऽग्रेण तं कर्णस् त्व् अभिद्रुत्य परामृशत् ॥
उत्स्मयन्न् इव राधेयो भीमसेनम् उवाच ह ॥
पुनः पुनस् तूबरक मूढ औदरिकेति च ॥
अकृतास्त्रक मा योत्सीर् बाल संग्रामकातर ॥
यत्र भोज्यं बहुविधं भक्ष्यं पेयं च पाण्डव ॥
तत्र त्वं दुर्मते योग्यो न युद्धेषु कथं चन ॥
मुनिर् भूत्वाथ वा भीम फलान् यद् धि सुदुर्मते ॥
वनाय व्रज कौन्तेय न त्वं युद्धविशारदः ॥
dhanuṣo 'greṇa taṃ karṇas tv abhidrutya parāmṛśat ||
utsmayann iva rādheyo bhīmasenam uvāca ha ||
punaḥ punas tūbaraka mūḍha audariketi ca ||
akṛtāstraka mā yotsīr bāla saṃgrāmakātara ||
yatra bhojyaṃ bahuvidhaṃ bhakṣyaṃ peyaṃ ca pāṇḍava ||
tatra tvaṃ durmate yogyo na yuddheṣu kathaṃ cana ||
munir bhūtvātha vā bhīma phalān yad dhi sudurmate ||
vanāya vraja kaunteya na tvaṃ yuddhaviśāradaḥ ||
With the tip of his bow, Karna, having rushed up, touched him, and, as if smiling, Radheya said to Bhimasena: 'Again and again, O hornless one, fool, glutton, unskilled in weapons — do not fight, child, faint-hearted in war! Where food of many kinds, snacks and drink [are found], O Pandava — there you, dim-witted one, are fit, but in battles — never. Having become a hermit, or else, O Bhima, feeding on fruits, O very dim-witted one, go to the forest, son of Kunti; you are not skilled in battle.'

Karna spares his enemy's life — but not his tongue: touching him with the tip of his bow, he showers him with mockery. Mercy darkened by derision exposes a flaw of the heart: to restrain the hand but not the cruel word is only half a nobility. It is telling that the mocker calls 'faint-hearted' the very man who a moment ago went at him unarmed: mockery often speaks the opposite of truth. The verse teaches that a mercy poisoned by humiliation loses its worth; the truly magnanimous man restrains his speech as well, for the wound of mockery is bitterer than that of the body.
