श्रुत्वैतद् गर्जितं वीर हास्यं हि मम जायते ॥
चिरकालेप्सितं लोके युद्धम् अद्यास्तु कौरव ॥
त्वरते मे मतिस् तात त्वयि युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणि ॥
नाहत्वा संनिवर्तिष्ये त्वाम् अद्य पुरुषाधम ॥
अन्योन्यं तौ तदा वाग्भिस् तक्षन्तौ नरपुंगवौ ॥
जिघांसू परमक्रुद्धाव् अभिजघ्नतुर् आहवे ॥
śrutvaitad garjitaṃ vīra hāsyaṃ hi mama jāyate ||
cirakālepsitaṃ loke yuddham adyāstu kaurava ||
tvarate me matis tāta tvayi yuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇi ||
nāhatvā saṃnivartiṣye tvām adya puruṣādhama ||
anyonyaṃ tau tadā vāgbhis takṣantau narapuṃgavau ||
jighāṃsū paramakruddhāv abhijaghnatur āhave ||
"Hearing this roar, O hero, laughter arises in me. Let the battle so long desired in the world be now, O Kaurava. My mind hastens, dear one, since you crave battle; I shall not turn back today without slaying you, vilest of men." Those two bulls among men, lacerating each other with words, craving to slay each other, exceedingly enraged, struck each other in battle.

Sātyaki meets the boast with laughter and turns the quarrel from words to deed: "let the battle be." It is telling that he too answers with a harsh word -- mutual abuse weaves itself into the fight even here: even the valorous are not wholly free of the tongue's anger. The verse teaches that a contest of boasts is fruitless on both sides; and though it is nobler to meet a threat with deeds, a war of words rarely goes entirely unanswered -- anger is contagious.
