संजय उवाच
शृणु राजन्न् इहोत्पत्तिं शैनेयस्य यथा पुरा ॥
यथा च भूरिश्रवसो यत्र ते संशयो नृप ॥
अत्रेः पुत्रो ऽभवत् सोमः सोमस्य तु बुधः स्मृतः ॥
बुधस्यासीन् महेन्द्राभः पुत्र एकः पुरूरवाः ॥
पुरूरवस आयुस् तु आयुषो नहुषः स्मृतः ॥
नहुषस्य ययातिस् तु राजर्षिर् देवसंमितः ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
śṛṇu rājann ihotpattiṃ śaineyasya yathā purā ||
yathā ca bhūriśravaso yatra te saṃśayo nṛpa ||
atreḥ putro 'bhavat somaḥ somasya tu budhaḥ smṛtaḥ ||
budhasyāsīn mahendrābhaḥ putra ekaḥ purūravāḥ ||
purūravasa āyus tu āyuṣo nahuṣaḥ smṛtaḥ ||
nahuṣasya yayātis tu rājarṣir devasaṃmitaḥ ||
"Listen, king, to the origin of Shaineya, as it was of old, and of Bhurishravas — in this is your doubt, o king. Atri's son was Soma; from Soma, it is remembered, came Budha; Budha had a single son, resembling the great Indra — Pururava. Pururava's son was Ayus; Ayus's son, it is remembered, was Nahusha; Nahusha's son was Yayati, a royal sage ranked equal with the gods."

To explain a single blow struck on the field, the narrator ascends all the way to Soma himself, to the beginning of the lunar line: the present is rooted in a deep past. It is telling that the genealogy here is no mere ornament but the key to meaning: the feud of the two is a link in a long chain. The verse teaches that nothing arises of itself; to understand an event one must know its roots, for the fruit of the present day ripened from a seed sown generations ago.
