तम् आपतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य सात्वतं रभसं रणे ॥
सोमदत्तो महाबाहुर् असंभ्रान्तो ऽभ्यवर्तत ॥
विमुञ्चञ् शरवर्षाणि पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥
छादयाम् आस शैनेयं जलदो भास्करं यथा ॥
असंभ्रान्तश् च समरे सात्यकिः कुरुपुंगवम् ॥
छादयाम् आस बाणौघैः समन्ताद् भरतर्षभ ॥
सोमदत्तस् तु तं षष्ट्या विव्याधोरसि माधवम् ॥
सात्यकिश् चापि तं राजन्न् अविध्यत् सायकैः शितैः ॥
tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya sātvataṃ rabhasaṃ raṇe ||
somadatto mahābāhur asaṃbhrānto 'bhyavartata ||
vimuñcañ śaravarṣāṇi parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān ||
chādayām āsa śaineyaṃ jalado bhāskaraṃ yathā ||
asaṃbhrāntaś ca samare sātyakiḥ kurupuṃgavam ||
chādayām āsa bāṇaughaiḥ samantād bharatarṣabha ||
somadattas tu taṃ ṣaṣṭyā vivyādhorasi mādhavam ||
sātyakiś cāpi taṃ rājann avidhyat sāyakaiḥ śitaiḥ ||
Seeing Satvata, fierce in battle, rushing upon him, mighty-armed Somadatta advanced to meet him without flinching. Pouring forth streams of arrows like a raincloud, he covered Shaineya as a cloud covers the sun. And Satyaki, unshaken in the melee, showered the bull of the Kurus with torrents of arrows from every side, O bull among the Bharatas. Somadatta pierced Madhava in the chest with sixty arrows, and Satyaki too pierced him with sharp arrows, O king.

Two equal warriors meet, and each faces the other 'without flinching' — unshaken calm is named twice, and it is the very measure of their valor. It is telling that the verse exalts neither above the other but sets them side by side: cloud against sun, torrent against torrent. The verse teaches that in the clash of the worthy, it is not a burst of fury that decides the outcome but that stillness of spirit, undisturbed by attack or wound, in which the true blow is born.
