ततः परमनाराचैर् युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ॥
सात्यकिं च रथोदारं कम्पयाम् आस मार्गणैः ॥
तेषाम् अभ्यस्यतां तत्र सर्वेषां सव्यदक्षिणम् ॥
मण्डलान्य् एव चापानि व्यदृश्यन्त जनाधिप ॥
तेषां ज्यातलनिर्घोषो रथनेमिस्वनश् च ह ॥
मेघानाम् इव घर्मान्ते बभूव तुमुलो निशि ॥
ज्यानेमिघोषस्तनयित्नुमान् वै; धनुस्तडिन् मण्डलकेतुशृङ्गः ॥
शरौघवर्षाकुलवृष्टिमांश् च; संग्राममेघः स बभूव राजन् ॥
tataḥ paramanārācair yudhāmanyūttamaujasau ||

teṣām abhyasyatāṃ tatra sarveṣāṃ savyadakṣiṇam ||

teṣāṃ jyātalanirghoṣo rathanemisvanaś ca ha ||
meghānām iva gharmānte babhūva tumulo niśi ||
jyānemighoṣastanayitnumān vai; dhanustaḍin maṇḍalaketuśṛṅgaḥ ||
śaraughavarṣākulavṛṣṭimāṃś ca; saṃgrāmameghaḥ sa babhūva rājan ||
Then with superb iron arrows he made Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas, and Satyaki, the excellent warrior, tremble with his shafts. Among them, as they all shot there, left and right, the bows showed only circles, O lord of men. The sound of bowstring and palm among them, and the sound of the chariot-wheel rims, was tumultuous in the night, like the thunder of clouds at the close of the hot season. Karna appears as the 'cloud of battle': the bow is lightning, the bowstring is thunder, the arrows are rain. It is telling how the warrior is transfigured into a storm — his might likened not to a man but to a tempest. The verse teaches that the greatest power reveals itself in images drawn from nature: where words about valor fall short, the image of the storm speaks; and one who has become like a cloud pouring forth a rain of arrows has surpassed the measure of the human — yet, like a cloud, he too is not eternal.
