अन्तर्हितं राक्षसं तं विदित्वा; संप्राक्रोशन् कुरवः सर्व एव ॥
कथं नायं राक्षसः कूटयोधी; हन्यात् कर्णं समरे ऽदृश्यमानः ॥
ततः कर्णो लघुचित्रास्त्रयोधी; सर्वा दिशो व्यावृणोद् बाणजालैः ॥
न वै किं चिद् व्यापतत् तत्र भूतं; तमोभूते सायकैर् अन्तरिक्षे ॥
न चाददानो न च संदधानो; न चेषुधी स्पृशमानः कराग्रैः ॥
अदृश्यद् वै लाघवात् सूतपुत्रः; सर्वं बाणैश् छादयानो ऽन्तरिक्षम् ॥
ततो मायां विहिताम् अन्तरिक्षे; घोरां भीमां दारुणां राक्षसेन ॥
संपश्यामो लोहिताभ्रप्रकाशां; देदीप्यन्तीम् अग्निशिखाम् इवोग्राम् ॥

antarhitaṃ rākṣasaṃ taṃ viditvā; saṃprākrośan kuravaḥ sarva eva ||
kathaṃ nāyaṃ rākṣasaḥ kūṭayodhī; hanyāt karṇaṃ samare 'dṛśyamānaḥ ||
tataḥ karṇo laghucitrāstrayodhī; sarvā diśo vyāvṛṇod bāṇajālaiḥ ||
na vai kiṃ cid vyāpatat tatra bhūtaṃ; tamobhūte sāyakair antarikṣe ||
na cādadāno na ca saṃdadhāno; na ceṣudhī spṛśamānaḥ karāgraiḥ ||
adṛśyad vai lāghavāt sūtaputraḥ; sarvaṃ bāṇaiś chādayāno 'ntarikṣam ||
tato māyāṃ vihitām antarikṣe; ghorāṃ bhīmāṃ dāruṇāṃ rākṣasena ||
saṃpaśyāmo lohitābhraprakāśāṃ; dedīpyantīm agniśikhām ivogrām ||
Learning that the rakshasa had vanished, all the Kurus cried out as one: "How will this deceitful rakshasa, unseen, not slay Karna in battle?" Then Karna, skilled in swift and wondrous weapons, covered all directions with nets of arrows; not a single creature was struck there in the sky darkened by shafts. Neither taking [an arrow], nor fitting it, nor touching the quivers with his fingertips — the son of the suta could not be discerned for his swiftness, as he covered the whole sky with arrows. Then the illusion wrought in the sky, terrible, fearsome, dreadful, [wrought] by the rakshasa, we saw, with the glow of a blood-red cloud, blazing like a fierce tongue of fire.

Karna's hands move with such swiftness that none can tell whether he takes an arrow: mastery has reached the limit of the visible. It is telling that even this is powerless against an unseen foe — against the hidden, one needs not speed but something else. The verse teaches that there are limits even to the greatest skill: swiftness of hand cannot reach one who cannot be seen; and sometimes dexterity alone is not enough — what is needed is a means that strikes through the very darkness of illusion.
