वयम् एव तदाद्राक्ष्म पञ्च मानुषयोनयः ॥
योगयुक्तं महात्मानं गच्छन्तं परमां गतिम् ॥
अहं धनंजयः पार्थः कृपः शारद्वतो द्विजः ॥
वासुदेवश् च वार्ष्णेयो धर्मराजश् च पाण्डवः ॥
अन्ये तु सर्वे नापश्यन् भारद्वाजस्य धीमतः ॥
महिमानं महाराज योगमुक्तस्य गच्छतः ॥
गतिं परमिकां प्राप्तम् अजानन्तो नृयोनयः ॥
नापश्यन् गच्छमानं हि तं सार्धम् ऋषिपुंगवैः ॥
आचार्यं योगम् आस्थाय ब्रह्मलोकम् अरिंदमम् ॥

gatiṃ paramikāṃ prāptam ajānanto nṛyonayaḥ ||
nāpaśyan gacchamānaṃ hi taṃ sārdham ṛṣipuṃgavaiḥ ||
ācāryaṃ yogam āsthāya brahmalokam ariṃdamam ||
Only we, five born of human wombs, then saw him immersed in yoga, great in spirit, going by the highest path -- I [Sanjaya], Dhananjaya Partha [Arjuna], Kripa Sharadvata the twice-born, and Vasudeva Varshneya [Krishna], and the king of dharma, the Pandava [Yudhishthira]. But all the others did not see the greatness of the wise Bharadvaja, o great king, as he departed, released through yoga. Not knowing that he had attained the highest path, those born of human wombs did not see the Acharya departing together with the bull-like sages, who, established in yoga, [went] to the world of Brahma, the subduer of foes.

Only five beheld Drona's ascent -- those in whom the eye of spiritual vision is present; for the rest it remained hidden. Significant is that among those who see are both his enemies and his friend's son: the vision is granted not by faction but by inner ripeness. The verse teaches that the highest happenings are visible only to the prepared gaze; and the greatest mysteries of the spirit pass unnoticed by the crowd, revealing themselves only to those whose hearts are able to hold them.
